Hello!

My name is Lucia. I want to personally welcome you to La Maritxu and tell you the story behind our family business. 

We are a Basque family consisting of three sisters: Maria, who lives in Quito, Almudena, who lives in London and myself, Lucia, who also lives in London. For many years, my sisters and I dreamed of bringing a piece of Basque culture to our new homes abroad. We soon realised that one of the best things about Basque culture is its gastronomy. And so, in 2021, La Martixu was born.

The name ‘La Maritxu’ is a combination of my sister Maria’s name and the common Basque suffix -txu. In the Basque country, ending someone’s name with -txu (pronounced like “chew” (which is something we hope you will never have to do with our creamy desserts!) ‘’choo’ is a sign of familiarity and affection. This reflects the fact that the recipe for our Basque burnt cheesecake, also known as San Sebastian cheesecake, has been in our family for generations and is made with a very special ingredient: love.

I am a qualified architect and after the inception of La Maritxu, I continued to work full time as an architect for 5 years whilst baking in the evenings and on weekends. However, I recently quit my job to follow my passion and focus on La Maritxu full time.

Using the best quality ingredients, - and the most important one: love - our authentic Basque cheesecakes are made in store daily and can be purchased by the slice or whole. We are currently trialing additions to our menu, so stay tuned for more delicious Basque desserts in the future.
